Hampton Roads is a beautiful area of the state located on the Chesapeake Bay. It comprises seven cities: Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. If you have never visited this part of the country before, it will definitely be worth doing so.

The Colonies RV and Travel Park At Fort Monroe
- Location: Hampton, VA (near Fort Monroe National Monument)
- Amenities: The amenities for this location include a Pet-Friendly policy, a camp store, shower facilities, picnic tables at each site, laundry facilities, pickleball, and beach access.
- Nearby Activities: Shopping, biking, golfing, and beach.
- Campsites: full hookups including sewer and water. Sites can accommodate one large RV and a tent. There are also tent sites available if needed.
- Cost: $20/night for tent sites and $40-$60/night for RV spots.
- Why We Like It: The campgrounds are very clean, and the staff is friendly. The sites are extensive and private in comparison to many other parks in the area. The views at this location are amazing, and while it feels secluded and rural, it is close to several restaurants, shops, and more.
- What We Don’t Like: This park does not offer Wifi or cable.
Williamsburg RV and Camping Resort
- Location: Williamsburg, VA
- Amenities: This campground has many amenities, including two pools, a dog park, a spa, a game room, mini-golf, basketball, shuffleboard courts, and regularly scheduled events, including bingo and trivia.
- Nearby Activities: Williamsburg has many things to do and participate in. These include but are not limited to tours and wine tasting, shopping at Colonial Williamsburg and The Outlets, biking trails, canoeing, and kayaking on the James River.
- Campsites: Many RV sites include full hookups and tent sites available for those who do not wish to bring their own vehicle. Sites can accommodate up to a 40′ RV.
- Costs: Tent sites are $26/night, while full hookups cost $44-$74/night depending on the site selected and how many people stay there.
- Why We Like It: This park is immaculate, the staff is friendly, and it offers so much to do that will entertain the whole family and keep them busy even if you do not go anywhere else during your stay.
- What We Don’t Like: The pool hours are limited, which is a downer for those who love to swim or relax in the hot tub at night. There can also be quite a bit of noise from weekend campers, so this may not be the best location for those who want a quiet and peaceful weekend.

Bethpage Camp-Resort
- Location: Urbanna, VA
- Amenities: This camp resort has a ton of amenities available for its guests. The best amenities offered include a huge pool with waterslides, an ice cream shop, waterfront sites, mini-golf, and more.
- Nearby Activities: Urbanna is a small town that is perfect for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. There are many boating opportunities here with an on-site marina available, as well as a ton of wildlife, including eagles, ospreys, herons, and more!
- Campsites: This camp resort has full hookups available for RVs and cottages that sleep six people each. There are also sites with water, electric, sewer hookup, and tent camping spots if preferred.
- Costs: Full Hookup campsites cost $50/night while cottage sleeping six costs $80-$100/night depending on the season. Water and Electric sites cost $65/night, while the tent camping spots are available for a lower price.
- Why We Like It: This camp resort is tidy, there’s plenty to do here, including live music in the evenings, and it has an on-site restaurant that serves delicious food in a casual setting.
- What We Don’t Like: The RV sites are very close together. There is not a lot of room to spread out at each site. This resort also can be quite packed. Be sure to make reservations far in advance.
North Landing Beach RV Resorts and Cottages
- Location: Virginia Beach, VA
- Amenities: This campground/ resort offers many amenities, including beach access, large sites, a bathhouse, a swimming pool, ice cream shop, and more.
- Nearby Activities: Virginia Beach has so much to do that you could never get bored. There are amazing eateries, beautiful beaches, a water park, and many outdoor activities.
- Cost: Full Hookup sites range anywhere from $35 per night all the way up to $120. The cost depends on the type of site, location, and travel season.
- Why We Like It: This campground has everything you need right at your fingertips. If you are looking for a great waterfront experience with tons of outdoor activities, this is the perfect place for you. The staff at this location are very nice and super helpful.
- What We Don’t Like: This campground has some difficult roads to maneuver for a large RV. These roads have the possibility of flooding during rainier seasons. When we visited, the pool was not the cleanest. *This may not be the current condition.
Virginia Beach KOA
- Location: Virginia Beach, VA
- Amenities: KOA’s are known for having great amenities. This park does not disappoint in this area. They have 2 large swimming pools, bathhouses, a game room, a dog-friendly park, a convenience store, wifi, shuttle services, and many different types of sport courts.
- Nearby Activities: This resort is super close to the beach and has tons of restaurants.
- Campsites: Full hookups with pull thru sites available for RVs, cabins, and cottages. Tent camping spots are available, too, if preferred. There are plenty of different sizes of sites available.
- Costs: Full hookup RV with pull-thru spots range anywhere from $45-$120/night depending on the time of year and size of the site you prefer. Cabins start at around $75 a night, while cottages with full hookups cost about $100. Tent camping is also available and costs around $25 per person.
- Why We Like It: This campground has a great location for a beach vacation. It’s very close to the beach as well as many restaurants and shopping centers. The amenities here are also wonderful!
- What We Don’t Like: It is not a great resort if you want a more rural feel. It can also be quite noisy and crowded at certain times of the year.
Little Creek JEB Campground
- Location: Virginia Beach, VA
- Amenities: This nice military campground has laundry facilities, a bathhouse, and it is close to beach access.
- Nearby Activities: If you are in Virginia Beach, you will be close to miniature golf courses, beaches, restaurants, and every touristy activity you can think of.
- Cost: Tent sites range anywhere from $10-$30, depending on the season. Full hookups sites are available for about $27 per night during peak travel times.
- Why We Like It: The price is fantastic. The location is great, and the sites are level and clean.
- What We Don’t Like: This resort is only available for active-duty military, spouses, veterans, and retirees.
Chesapeake Bay RV Resort
- Location: Gloucester, VA
- Amenities: This campground has two pools, sports courts, an ice cream shop, lake access, wifi, and more.
- Nearby Activities: There is not a ton to do in this area. If you like the outdoors, there are a few trails and parks to explore. You can also fish, hike, bike, and kayak.
- Campsites: Full hookups with pull thru sites available for RV’s, cabins, and cottages. The costs range from around $30-$100 per night, depending on the site, location, and season.
- Why We Like It: This is a very family-friendly resort with tons of planned activities. They have live music events, dance parties, and more. The grounds are clean, and the staff is accommodating and friendly.
- What We Don’t Like: This campground is bustling and crowded during the summer months. It can become very noisy depending on where you are parked.
Chesapeake Campground
- Location: Chesapeake, VA
- Amenities: The Chesapeake campground has a driving range, bike rentals, a convenience store, mini-golf, hayrides, and pony rides.
- Nearby Activities: This campground is located close to the Dismal Swamp trail. If you love outdoor activities, this campground is fantastic. Be sure to rent a bike from the store and take a stroll down the beautiful Dismal Swamp trail.
- Costs: The costs range from about $36-$43 depending on the site and time of year.
- Why We Like It: This area is beautiful and full of fun activities for everyone in your family to enjoy! There are tons of planned events that you can participate in as well.
- What We Don’t Like: This campground is difficult to book due to its popularity.

Davis Lakes and Campground
- Location: Suffolk, VA
- Amenities: This place is situated around two lakes with catch and release fishing, water sports, and a small beach for lounging. They offer wifi, a great country store, and outdoor games (think cornhole and horseshoes).
- Nearby Activities: Suffolk is home to the Suffolk Seaboard Railroad Museum, Dismal Swamp, awesome parks, and a peanut factory.
- Campsites: The campsites are large and level. They are easy to access and have full hookups.
- Cost: Sites range from $25-$60 depending on the time of year and type of site you prefer (tent or full hookups).
- Why We Like It: The staff is amazing, it is a charming resort, they have regular activities planned, and the pricing is excellent.
- What We Don’t Like: It can be difficult to book a site due to the resort’s popularity.

What About Full-Timing in Hampton Roads?
RVers who plan to live full-time in an RV may find it difficult to find parks, resorts, or campgrounds that allow all-year camping. Many campgrounds close for winter, and others do not allow “living in a recreational vehicle.”
This means that many of the parks will allow you to park your rig on site but have restrictions on how many days per year you are allowed to stay on site.
There are, however, a few parks and campgrounds that will allow full-timers to reside for several months at a time. Many of the parks offer seasonal rates during the winter months. This makes it difficult for full-timers to call one place home.
It is more likely that you will have to book in advance and change parks to live full time out of your RV in this area. We suggest checking out all parks and making reservations as early as one year in advance.
KOA’s generally offer a monthly rate and will allow full-time RVers. With that said, there may be a waitlist for these coveted spots.
